The not so bright engineer

Some where along the line, After gone on numerous start-ups, worked thousand hours of uncompensate overtime, and had to scrupulously tailor numerous goals so that you can survive the performance reviews. you will be thinking whether you are a successful engineer or not.

First you must define success, if success for you means all of the benefits, prestige, company reputation, job security that available in the large corporation. Then you should try to become the brightest candidates who are ready to play the corporate game for your  raises and promotion.

The not so bright engineer like me on the other hand should not become  disheartened, and go from the lowlife engineer on the early shift of start-ups to being and consultant after a golden handshake (or silver handshake, depending on the amount of money involved).

After gained experiences, talents, and vast knowledge that could be of value to variety of companies. The not so bright engineer can have several possible careers:

1. Work for a small engineering firm where you can enjoy the challenge of the job without having to play the corporate game.

2. Acquire the comforts of getting paid more than engineers by becoming instrument sales representative.

3. Become a manager after you received your MBA from a local college's weekend program.

4. Become a contract engineer in a large corporation. somehow the author doesn't have the inclination to share  much of his experiences as a contract enginèer.

At the end, it doesn't really matter whether you work for the lage corporation or a small engineering firm. Success depends on how you are perceived by your management or clients.
