The ones left to turn out the lights

In these days of downturn in oil industry and decaying engineering departments. It is interesting to note that the design engineers are considered expendables. The goals of the project, which are fast and cheap installation are increasingly emphasized over the functional and reliable installations.

In the last throes of a engineering department, man-hours and money were cut from the projects. Who cares if the installation doesn't work ? After all, the cost to fix an application is charged against expense and not against capital.

Furthermore, if man-hours were reduced on all projects, the number of engineers, the support groups could also be cut. Who cares if there is no one left to do the work? The project can always be contracted out.

Such departments are self destruct, and when such organizations dissapear completely, Who are the ones left to turn out the lights?
